Steering wheel controls screwed

My volume buttons quit working properly the other day.

up = up
down = up

The service dept at the dealer told me that it was some harness that costs over 300 flipping dollars and it isn't even a better version than the one that failed. Just a replacement that might burn out again in a couple years. I can reach over and use the volume knob just fine, but it would be nice to use the steering wheel controls.

Any "easy" fixes or am I just screwed?

Try pushing the radio in (towards the motor). My buttons do this occasionally and it's because the radio slips out a bit.

It's just an age vs dirt thing. The buttons are resistance based and over time dirt and corrosion will make their way down into the steering wheel buttons. Hot/cold will sometimes cause this problem to appear for brief periods also.
As disco said, pushing in on the face of the radio may help(and it's free). Also, pulling the steering wheel controls and cleaning the contacts may help if the problem persists.(also free if you are semi mechanically inclined).

You can try to take it to somewhere like Best Buy, and see if there audio installers can do something for you. I've seen my guys at work do it before to other vechicles.

I, luckily, got my buttons fixed under warranty, but I had a similar problem. For me, it was:

Mute = Mute
Up = Mute
Down = Up

So yeah, a song's quality would be better than the previous, and it'd start banging the hell out of the speakers. Instead of turning it down, I'd end up making it louder.

Hope you get it fixed.

Use the knob?

Who uses those stupid buttons on the steering wheel?
