View Full Version : New Drag Setup

Well I decided to make my own drag pack. I used the stock spare wheels and M&H tires as front runners, and 17x9.5 ZR1 wheels and 275/40/17 Mickey Thompson DR's. No rubbing on the inner fenders and the offset came out perfect so they just tuck inside the fender lips. Once Chris gets done with the final set of rear coilover brackets I'll be setting her down about an inch in the rear over the tires. Can't wait to get to the track soon and test em' out. These tires dead hook on the street!

Setup looks great man, I am working on doing the same thing so I can be at Steet Wars 10/24/09.

I was planning on doing grabbing another spare for the front and then getting 2 15" BMW wheels with some 235/60/15 MT's. Everyone seems to say that Bias Ply is the way to go for an M6. Does anyone know what size tire Bias Ply I could put on that BMW wheel. That or maybe another suggestion as to a fairly cheap setup for the back end? I need something that I can use without having to get new rear springs, drag bags or rolling/cutting the fenders. I dont believe I can get a Bias Ply MT on that 15" BMW rim without getting it widened or getting a different rim.

Thanks guys! Poolshark, if you are going to run the 7" or 8" BMW wheels on the rear, the Mickey Thompson Bias Ply slick is made in a 26/8.5/15 and it fits perfectly underneath the rear fenders with ZERO modifications.

I had trouble hooking up on 26x11.6 17's. Not sure how well an 8.5" is going to hook.

The 15" 8.5 M/T hook up extremely well. I think the sidewall wrinkle on the 15" is what really helps them. We run an Outlaw 8.5 class down here in Texas since the true 10.5 class has gotten so out of reach for the average enthusiast. The 8.5 Outlaw class is now running in the 5.60-5.50 1/8 mile. That should be good for a high 8 or low 9 second pass so he should be fine with a little practice.

If you want to meet up there Friday I'll meet you, weather permitting. Sounds like we may have a soaker the end of this week into the weekend. The news just said 5" between tomorrow and Sunday. If it's clear, I'm in! And, if you need help with anything I am off till this Saturday then I go in for a few days.

Thanks, I just wanted to do a little logging on the street to make sure I'm good to go.
Last weather I heard it's clearing up after Fri morning. I'm off Friday so if the weather is good, I'll probably be there.

THANKS for the tire specs!!!!!

Yes from what I have read the 15" hook good even though they are only 8.5 because the sides wrinkle real good on the Bias Ply.

Sooo another front runner, 2 bmw wheels, 2 MT's, helmet, SS clutch lines, full fluid swap, Hawk HPS Brake Pads and hopefully some drag bags if I can afford it before 10/24. Its mandatory for me to atleast have the back 2 tires, helmet, SS clutch lines and full fluid swap before then though. Other things can wait a little bit...

Did a little looking around for the exact tire your talking about and I had a question. Which one is the Bias Ply tire... I see Street Drag Radial Tires and Street Drag Tires. I believe its the Street Drag Radial like this one.

http://www.jegs.com/i/Mickey-Thompson/672/3752R/10002/-1

It says its...

Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial Tire P235/60R15 (26'' x 9.5'' - 15'')
R2 Compound
Special Sidewall Construction for Quicker Launches

I know you said it was 26" x 8.5 - 15"... but I assume you meant this tire. Is this the correct Bias Ply tire that you were talking about for the BMW Wheels?

Or maybe this???

Thanks again, just wanna make sure I buy the right tires...

The drag radial is of "Radial" Construction so it is not what you said you were looking for.

Bias Ply is of "Non-Radial" Construction.

Here is what you are looking for: http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/strip.php?item=ETDrag&sku=3052&size=26.0/8.5-15&type=SS

Thanks Kingsize appreciate you clarifying that and hunting it down.

So that is a slick then correct? I would have to drive to the track with my street tires and then change them once I get there? Then change them before I leave to go home correct?

Also I noticed your not using a slick your using a Radial and you pushing way more HP then I am. Is this tire overkill for my mods and am I better off using a radial of some type?

I am looking to compete in Midnight 1320: Street Wars on 10/24. If I use the slick tires I will be in the Pro Street class and will more then likely get my ass handed to me by everyone because I have very little mods. I just want to be in a class that I have a chance at and will get some good races (win or lose). I just dont want to get stomped cause I am close to stock but using slicks. I am not in it to win it (although that would be great) I just want to race people that I will be closely matched with as to guarantee a good Drag Race.

If I were you I would run in the street or drag radial class. Their are some pretty sticky street tires out now that are somewhat comparable to a drag radial in compound. I think you could be competitive in either of these two classes if your consistent. Also, if you have never run in a class with a "Pro Tree" I would suggest getting to your local track and practicing. Just ask them for a pro tree when you are pulling up to the burnout box and they will set it up for you.

Thanks for the tips once again...

If money wasnt an option I would probably just go and run on my daily driving tires... Michelin Pilot Sport Plus A/S. But seeing as those things cost me a pretty penny and they have a 45k mile warranty on them. I dont want to be wearing them out at the track.

I have decided to go with two 15" BMW wheels and two of the Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial Drag Tires

HRP is having a motorcycle event there this weekend so that's out.

I"m on my way out the door now to do some data logging, if I find I just need to hit a track tonight I may go to HMP. I'll post in the TX section if I do.

Sounds good. HMP may bee a good place to just let me work on my 60' without running it balls out on the top end. Let me know! :)
