View Full Version : How To: Installing Load Resistors for LED Turn Signals

Well a few people over on the other forums in my HID install and front LED Turn Signal Install thread asked me to find out about Load Resistors for the Hyper Flash problem, and what LED's I was using...

So here is a quick DIY!

Parts Needed:
(1 Pair) 48-SMT or 60-SMT Switchback LED's in 1157
http://autolumination.com/switchback.html
(1 Pair) 3 OHM 50 Watt Load Equalizers
http://autolumination.com/equalizers.htm
(1) 10mm Wrench

Starting Off
First, as the videos will show, I have the 48-SMT LED's which means when my Turn Signal is enabled, the white remains on but Amber will flash. They have the (AO) Option for the 60-SMT's that will only flash Orange.. but they are a little more money.

The Load Equalizer you want you will find half way down that page, and it is the one furthest to the right.

I recommend that equalizer because it should maintain the non-hyper flash even if you install rear LED turn signals.

NOTE: I have no ties to Autolumination. I used to own my own LED business but sold all of my stock. I simply find them to be the most reasonably priced, quick shipping and trust worthy.

Installation
1. Remove Battery and Remove Airbox (For those with stock intakes, this will be easier to access your turn signal wiring).

2. Take out previous stock bulbs, and replace with the LED's.

*** At this point, check them and they should look something like this.. ***

3. Peal back some of the black tape on the wiring, take your Load Resistors/Equalizers and crimp one of the resistor wire to the black & white wire, and crimp the other side to the blue wire.

4. Do it to the passenger side and you're done! Should look like this...

Enjoy! Any questions, feel free to ask.

My HID's ? No none at all.

I actually am an HID Wholesaler for DDM Tuning, for fun. Non-Profit x_x and I do that so I can sell them cheaper than anyone else.

how much would a set of HIDs for headlights and fogs be, for a 2004 GTO?

im not looking to break the record on intensity here, i just want something that will last WITHOUT any problems for a while.

Sounds good. Just hit me up when you are ready.

are these HID's made to fit the headlight, or do they require modification?

All HID Kits for our GTO's require you to cut a circle in the back of the plastic caps for the wiring to run through.

Besides that, it's like changing a normal bulb.

Thanks for posting this thread General. I like those LED turn signals a lot! Sounds like a great mod, and easy to do.

Has anyone else noticed how the stock lights don't seem to illuminate to the sides at all? (Like when you are turning into a dark driveway, and have to roll down the window to see where you are going.) My window tint is not that dark, and you can see the lights just do not light up to the sides at all. I wish there was a way to get more illumination to the sides where you will be turning. Will the HID lights help with this? I'm very interested in changing to HID headlights as well as HID fog lights.

I've been doing a little research on HID lights and found out the desired color temp. is in the daylight spectrum, which is in the 5000K area. Our eyes are made to be receptive to, and see better, in the daylight spectrum. The higher spectrums of 8000K to 12000K will be very blue to purple, and cut down on visibility in poor weather. So IMHO stay with the lower color temps. When I get headlights, I'll order the 5000K bulbs, and the 3000K for fog lights.

BTW if anyone does a HID install please post a DYI thread (WITH PHOTOS) about it. Seeing photos of the install is very helpful to me, as well as lots of others.

Yessir :) And it is more of a need than a want. Trust me, first time I installed HID's into my car, I told myself it'd be my first mod. Sooo, I had them waiting for the GTO in my garage when I bought it ;)

infinite-hids.com is my site.

And yes helicopter ... 4500K - 5000K would be the brightest bulb temperatures. HID install should take no longer than 20 minutes. For my GTO, it took me 10 minutes .. just because I've done it often.

-Take battery out.
-Take old bulbs out
-Cut circle in caps (I have a drill bit that cuts the proper size)
-Install HID lights
-Plug in wires
-Hook up battery
-Done

(Brief quick description).

Just visited your site. Nice prices! To do a 55W 5000K headlight replacement with H11 bulbs, and a 35W 3000K fog light with 9040 bulbs replacement, what else, other than what comes in the kits would I need? I saw a relay harness listed there as a extra. Do I need that too?

All you would need are the kits. The relay harness may help allow you to keep your Daytime Running Lights but for me, I don't have a Relay on my car so I took out my DRL Relay.

Yes, that means you need to switch your lights on and off, but that don't bother me any.

The Relay Harness also helps by running power directly from your battery, instead of your stock power wires but also it will take a bit more time to install the HID's.

Regards,
Kyle

thanks Kyle I'll be ordering them soon. I'dlike to keep the day time running lights so I guess I need that harness.
I'll pm you when I get ready to order to make sure about the order.

Doug
