so, ive taken my fair share of martial arts training. had a blast with muay thai, did a tiny bit of judo back in the day and have recently caught the brazilian jiu jitsu bug.
so, for the last month and a half, ive been going to a BJJ school near my house 3 times a week. its a BLAST! great instructor, easy to work with students and a very laid back atmosphere that im enjoying very much. its pretty much 30 minutes of instruction, then the rest of the class is dedicated to rolling with different people - i love it.
well, last night a friend asked me to go with him to the place where he trains, thought it would be good for me to see a different facility...
holy chit.
instead of the 8 people (maximum) that im used to, there were almost 40 people there. the place is very strict, VERY tough and they create lots and lots of tourney proven fighters.
man, i got my ass kicked.
i rolled with a few blue belts and my friend, who is a purple belt - he is the only one who completely pwnd me... i held my own against the blues but eventually tapped to all of them. at my school, ive tapped all of the blue belts ive come across.
today im bruised, sore and i think my nose is going to pack up and walk the eff right off of my face... but i feel AWESOME.
it was SO much fun and the place is so nice... an actual gracie barra school... im seriously considering switching gyms.
anyone else here like to get beat up?

I was thinking about going to a MMA Training place in The Woodlands. Is that where you go? I did a little training when I lived in Buffalo, but never got back into it down here. I use to love going in there all pissed off at whatever. Take my anger out on somebody, and than feel a whole lot better. It was a great work out to get you into great shape..

my usual gym is grounddwellers on louetta. last night i went to Elite in the woodlands. if youre just starting up again after a long hiatus and just want some excercise, id definately recommend grounddwellers.
if you want to completely change the way you look at working out and train like a professional fighter, go to Elite.

Dude, Rick - I might actually have you take me out to this sometime.
For the last year I've tried REALLY hard to get into shape - starting with a New Year's resolution that I actually kept - and I've been pretty pleased.
I've completely changed my diet (these d*mn installs and their pizza keep ruining this) and have started a pretty minimal - but completely new-up-until-now - workout routine of a short run (mile or two) in the morning and walking everywhere I can both at the big complex in Belaire and downtown.
I have dropped from nearly 270+lbs (there was a time I got visibly larger after a near-270lb scale reading where I was too depressed to step on the scale) to ~175. Lately, depending on how strict I am with my diet/exorcise, I can fluctuate anywhere from 173-176.
But I feel that I've reached the end of where my paltry efforts can take me. I'm happy with how I look now (and I've certainly spent a small fortune on a whole new closet of clothes and tailored suits), but now that I'm in this mindset there's always that little bit of pudge, the jiggle in the thigh, etc that I could do something about.
I want to define my muscles a little better - I do not, in ANY way, desire to be a short, muscle-y guy who can't bend his arms down - but it would be nice to be toned enough to where it didn't just look like I was sucking my gut in everywhere, you know? I've got big arms and shoulders and I'm pretty strong - but, just looking at me, it just looks like I've got a stocky build.
Would I be able to tone a bit doing this MMA thing? I'll be honest, lifting weights is as BORING AS SH*T and doing pushups/situps just makes me miss the Air Force. This sounds a bit fun (though I normally don't enjoy getting my ass kicked?) and I'd get to wear really cool ULTIMATE FIGHTER-styled clothes. /sarcasm
LMK - I'm definitely intrigued enough to make the drive one night.

What days do you usually meet? My schedule is kinda crazy on some days with work and school.. I would be really interested in getting back into fighting.. I miss it.

youre welcome whenever, man. its $10 per class if you want to try it out - then $100 per month if you decide you like it and want to go in whenever you feel like it. (unlimited training)
and yes, you will most definately see results... the basic premise is, you put on a gi (basically a thick, cotton suit) and roll around on the ground for up to an hour at a time. it might not sound like much, but i guarantee you this: you WILL sweat like a freak, your muscles WILL tone up pretty quick and you will probably throw up a couple of times along the way. now, thats just the BJJ portion of it... the other half of the equation (IMHO) is muay thai and THAT is where the pounds will literally fall off while you fight. MT is one hell of a workout and the more you do it, the more youre motivated to do it more.
the reason ive chosen MMA as a way to get healthy is exactly the reason you hate running... everything else is REALLY boring once you get hooked on fighting.

yes he does, i thought Tim trained at elite, but i could be wrong. hopefully he'll chime in. and yah, i think he fights LHW or HW... i wanna say he's around 225.

i go tuesdays (730-9) thursdays (730-9) and saturdays (10-12)
the muay thai class is 7-8, then BJJ is 8-9. ive been skipping most of the muay thai classes lately and spending the first half hour im there, stretching and warming up so i can go 100% for the whole time.

Those times are pretty good for my schedule. I'll have to see whats up and will get back with you about joining. You said there is only 8 people in your class?

Also does that $100 cover everything you need? Like gloves and the cotton uniform. The class I took all you wore was shorts and a t-shirt.

the number of peeps varies, id say its about 8 on average. the $100 is just for the use of the facility and instruction by Eddie. the gi is extra, you can get a single stitch cotton one for about $99 (thats kimono and pants) or $149 for a double stitch.
we dont usually train in gis and if we do, there are some there you can use.
