View Full Version : Aux input for your stereo - September 12th

If anyone is interested in adding an Aux input to their stereo let me know. It is a fairly easy mod to do and I will be glad to help anyone install it. We'll have to schedule it for early September though. Maybe have everyone over to meet the baby and we can make a day out of it.

You're kidding... Dude. Please help me. FM transmitters SUCK and if I could listen to Pandora through the stock in-dash with decent quality, I would be in heaven.

Yeah modulators are terrible. This is a two wire solder job and each stereo can be done in about 15 minutes. Does anyone have a removal tool? getting the stereo out is the worst part.

So, once this is done, I can plug my iPod into the stock stereo? It doesn't have to play a blank CD or anything weird like that?

Okay, just so we have the clear... am I going to get banned?

You will just need two parts for this mod.
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103868
http://cgi.ebay.com/3.5mm-inline-headphone-noise-filter-ipod-noise-filter-_W0QQitemZ350217588053QQcmdZViewItem
You don't need these exact parts from these places but similar items. I was thinking possible Sept. 12th or 13th for this. Which day works best for everyone?

I'm interested. Either day works with enough advanced warning.
Are there any weird tricks required like playing a CD with nothing on it? How do you select the Aux input rather than the radio or CD changer?
Lancer-AM
07-26-2009, 06:56 PM
The way I do the mod does require a CD in the stereo but when done correctly it does not need to be blank, as long as the source signal is strong. I will burn off blanks for everyone though just in case.
Let's shoot for for the 12th.

I have a homemade removal tool, and I would totally be down for this mod, if I don't have it done already. If I do I will still stop by, and help out, and bring the tool.

i still have my removal tool as well... already have the aux in but i might upgrade it a bit with that noise filter adapter

The noise filter isn't required but I strongly recommend it. Otherwise if you charge your player while listening to it you will get whine through the speakers. Although if you want to make people ask if you have a supercharger you can leave it off :p

Nice mod guys, Lancer, G, and I performed this mod on our goats a while back and it works awesome... You can get the inline filter at Radioshack as well by the way. But there are quite a few places to get it. Called an inline filter or ground loop isolator. Takes that whine out of the signal if you are powering your device... Wish I could join you all as the new Crewman needs the mod done as well now...

Forgot one more piece you will need is a Male to male headphone cable. How long will depend where you want your jack located and how far away your player will be.
Oh yeah I am in Leander which is just north of Austin. I'll send out directions once we are closer to the date. I have the go-ahead from the wife as well.

Lancer-AM
07-28-2009, 11:21 PM
Ok Trent I looked into it. To be honest I am not comfortable performing that mod. It takes a pencil tip solder iron and some skill. The Aux input I do can be done by an 800 pound gorilla. That said all hope is not lost if you can't get your CD player to work. I have the guide on how to do it and there is a buddy of mine that hangs out with the AGH crew sometimes that is my go to guy for this level of work.
I'll ask him to take a look at it. He usually doesn't work for free and usually asks for about $50 to do this stuff but I will see if I can get him to discount it if you want it done.
I wish I could do this I am just not that good with an iron. If you register on the Austin Modders forums and butter up to those guys a bit the next time we do a meet there are plenty of guys that can do that stuff and they might help you out. They all have a special place in their hearts for GTO's since Mickey21 and I both have them.

I just got mine at Radio Shack, or now known as "The Shack." I noticed that my Ground Loop Isolator is actually not what I needed. So I'll be returning that this week. I actually wanted to get the high quality cables, but didn't wanna spend the extra dough.
Check to see if you have those cables in the audio section.
If so, cop me some, and I'll hit you back with cash.
I agree with you on the one central location meet-up. I also agree on the walkie-talkies. The route I took to Austin last was 290 to FM-734/E Palmer Ln. Took me to North Austin, rather than drive through it. Not sure how far North Lancer lives, but I'm down for any route, anyways. A cruise is a cruise, right?

Hey Lancer,
I have a couple questions to about the install. Alright I read a few things about the Aux input mod and some say that if you are not charging or powering the device off your car then there is no need for the ground loop isolator, is this true? Cause I have been looking around online at places like walmart, bestbuy, and radio shack, and cant seem to find a ground loop isolator similar to the the one you posted. The closest one I can find is this one here:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=4118145&st=car+isolator&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1122655296186
but it looks like it would have to be modded itself to work. I would rather not buy it online cause I dont want to risk it not getting to me in time for the get together.

Would really like to make this, that would be a good addition fo sho. But we're headed for Colorado that weekend for our 29th anniversery. I'm not thinking she would look favorably on a change in plans....
Thought I'd have to change out the unit to have this option. Don't really want to while it's working fine.
Guess I'll get the directions and lone wolf it later.

I also am wondering about what JayCub says. I got a Ground Loop Isolator from Radio Shack, but it comes with R & L cables (white and red) on both ends. One side comes with the adapter, but the other would still be R & L. Is this sufficient, or should I keep looking? All stores I've tried out only had something similar.

Tht is correct, the ground loop isolator is needed for when you are charging the device. I think I mentioned it somewhere in this thread but it has gotten pretty long. There is nothing stopping you from installing it later.

The first cable would be connected to the stereo and it would come out to female RCA plugs where you would plug in the GL isolator then you would use the second cable to plug into the other side of the GL isolator and would then plung into your device. This will give you a cable to plug stait into your device. If you would rather have a female 3.5mm plug somewhere to connect a cable to and then to your device we camn get there through a few adapters or some creative soldering. Let me know what you would like to do.

We'll figure out what our route is once time comes... I'm looking forward to hanging out with the Austin crowd again.. Hey Manny are you going to stay for the meet that night??
What time 'til what time? Are you driving back after that? Me and my buddy might just make it a night in Austin, but I'll run it by him.

Well Tents Goat5.7 and Youngguns350 were telling me that people are usually there till a little after midnight. So I'm guessing we wouldn't head back until 1230ish, and putting us into Houston around 330-4am. It would be really late getting home, but it would be fun to hang out with the guys from the Austin crew..
I'm still waiting on word from work if they are going to allow me to get off work. For some reason I have a gut feeling that there going to be d-bags and not allow me to have a Saturday off... There really tough on giving AP's any of the weekend days off... So I'll have to see tonight when I go into work if they approved it or not, if they didn't i'll mention it to my supervisor to get a answer out of her... I'll let you know whats up when I get out of work..

So, Lancer --- In addition to the ground loop isolator I bought, I got a 6 ft RCA cable with Y-adapter, 3 foot RCA cable and a coupler. Think that'll be good enough? 9+ feet with the Isolator...

You can make your own removal tool from a coat hanger. Just cut 4 pieces 6" longbend a 2" 90 degree bend at the end for handles. stick em in the holes and work the radio out.

Look forward to everyone coming out. You don't need to bring anything aside from what you need for your stereo, if you want to brings drinks that would be appreciated since we have so many people. For food we are going to take a trip down the road to a place called Moonie's. They were voted one of the best hamburgers in town and if you taste them you will see why. Anyone that went with us to Mighty Fine be prepared for one of the few burgers that can beat that out.
Let's try and kick this off at about 10am so we can get a few out of the way before food.

Lancer. Dude. I could have never done that mod, and had some semblance of a working headunit afterwards. LOL You made it look easy.
It's working freakin' great. Sorry I had to leave early. Wife and I went to watch the game, and on the way over, watched "Cars" of all things on my iPhone, playing through the system. That is so damn nice. I couldn't stand an FM transmitter's sound quality.

Oh man. Had such a great time. A lil' meet and greet with some fellow goat owners. Glad to be a part, and the mod is AWESOME! JayCub, you left just in time. I hung around for a few more hours, and had dinner with some friends. Went 71 to I-10, hauling ass the whole way, but the rain got BAD!!! Lit up the sky the entire way. I was goin 90 - 120 (minus the rainy parts and heavy turns) the whole way. Not a single cop the whole ride back.
I'll definitely be down to head back up there in the future. Be sure to let me know so I can plan ahead.
