View Full Version : Cam for an 04

I guess it's finally my turn to post a cam opinion thread. I recently put a set of 243's on my 04 with Patriot Gold Duals. I did this before the cam to ensure the valvetrain was solid before dropping the cam in it. But my car is a Daily driver. A lot of that is highway. I go drag racing maybe about 4-5 times a year. Low end power and torque seem good now it's top end I feel my car falls flat in.

I have had many different cams in my 04s, From top end only MegaDeath, to good solid low end tq, to FI cam etc. I am of the firm opinion at this point that I like have a cam custom speced to my heads/intake/exhaust etc. Once they know exactly what you have and what you want you can get a cam to perfectly suit you!

I am having to wait till next year for the cam. I am thinking of going with an Ed C cam and having him spec it out. As far as off the shelf the Streetsweeper HT has been what I have looked at the most. I have never seen anyone complain that their Ed C cam wasn't perfect for them.

What are the specs of your current cam? I may have a slightly used 228/230 cam available soon.

My new GTO has a SNL cam in that they dont disclose the specs. They are pretty close to yours.

I would recommend the TQv2. about 85% of our NA cars that come out of ouyr shop are that cam.. AWESOME DD cam. and great power! we normally get mid to high 42*'s out of an ls2 with this cam. You wouldnt be disappointed. and it will be cheaper than the custom cam, and will get you the same power. custom cams are great when you have a monster build and like a HUGE FI setup.....

Yeah I looked at the TQv2, Stang2Goat offered me a once in a lifetime deal on his too but it was a hair larger than I wanted to go. Most of that I think was due to the lobe seperation. I think 113-114 is more appropriate for me.

something like a 224/224 would be right up your alley.
my car with a 224/228 .581/.588 114 made 422 on the AFR heads.
it had a real livable idle and had good table manners down low and up top ran like a scalded ape.

Yeah Taylor just had the Torquer V3 stabbed in his car and it is freaking nasty as hell.

I've been doing a lot of research lately and I'm probably going to go with the Torquer V2 just like Stephen said (probably in 112 LSA just for a little chop). The Torquer V3 is just a little too aggressive for my taste, but I still want good low end torque (the V2 kicks in at 1800 whereas the V3 kicks in at 2300).

I've heard some good things about the V2.. Sounds like a lot of people have them for there DD drivers. Me personally I'll probably go with a V3..

What do you have done? Headers/Catback/Cam??
camarochevy1970

Headers, Spintech mufflers on stock pipe with an H pipe. I have since added a Vararam and I have a monster stage 3 clutch now. Stocker started to die first time I took the car to the track with the new cam lol

I want to replace the exhaust, as I am sure it is a bottleneck for me right now, and I am going to be porting my intake in a week or so.

Nice... If your considering replacing your exhaust you should get Corsa Sport. Take a look in the exhaust section Trents Goat5.7 posted some videos of my header install. All mine is right now is kooks lt's, catless mids, and corsa sport and it is LOUD! I've already had 2 guys at school come up to me asking what kind of cam I have. I've gotta get a Monster Stage 3 clutch soon before I do a cam install. I need to know that my clutch won't give out if I hit the go pedal hard..

How well did you stock clutch hold with the cam, headers, and catback??? I'm thinking once a cam goes in mine than I can kiss my clutch good bye. So I'm think I should get a Monster Stage 3 or 3.5 before I do the cam...

It was sort of ok on the street. However, the first time I took it down the track, even on street tires, it slipped above 4500 RPM

That does sound sick! ^^^ It is a great cam no doubt!
I am super happy with mine. Comp did my custom specs for me. Its a 228/230 .588/.592 on a 112+2
Great DD cam 40mph 6th gear 1,000 rpm= No problems for it
A lot of the DD aspect is in the tune as well :) if i behave and set cruise around 70 I can usually get 26+mpg on the highway
attached is dyno from last year on stock clutch( maybe sliping) stock throttle body, and no under drive pulley. All other mods in sig were on car at the time. yep stock 241's

Ok so time to seriously revive this thread. It was originally placed here just to start up the discussions on the board but I am acctually getting ready to buy a cam now. My computer room looks like an ebay clearance store. Maybe if I have enough left over for gas I can make my way out to Spring to swap exhausts with Schuff :-P
So I finally found what I truely enjoy doing with my car and drag racing isn't it. AutoX is a crap load of fun and I really enjoy it. The way my car is setup now it is really great for the sport. I am only running about 315HP but 350TQ to the wheels. AutoX is all about the quick accelleration off the line and once off of it being able to pick back up the speed quickly. Top End is not really a consideration. So has anyone had experience with a cam for AutoX and what has worked well for you?

Call SNL and talk to them about the v2 cam. It is perfect for that as it has tons of tq down low. I am looking for a couple .10ths at the track so I am going to the vx. I am selling it for 300 and springs for 150. They can give you more info

I like the V2, the only problem I have is the 112LSA. I was wanting a 114LSA, but at this point I haven't 100% made up my mind. Like I said though it will most likely be the end of the month before I am able to buy it so we'll see if you even still have it then. I forgot I still have my stock cats sitting in the garage so those are getting a trip to the recycler's tomorrow so that will be another $75 towards the goal there :-)

I got my cam finally, Sorry Daniel after talking to some of the AutoX guys running LS engines it was adivsed I go with a smaller cam. I need to make power around 1200 - 4000. It is rare in AutoX to get over that. I ended up going with a Howards cam 225/229 .580/.590 114LSA. Stang2Goat keeps telling me I will wish I went bigger and I might but we will give this a shot and see how it goes. April 10th is the first day I have to install it so Mod day at my house on the 10th, everyone is welcome to come by
