One thing I have always wondered about for our cars is where are the open source tuning options? Almost every other car in the world has them why don't we? Or do we and no one ever talks about it?

Haven't heard of anything yet but after I read this article:
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2009/05/congressmen-want-automakers-to-cough-up-diagnostic-codes.ars (http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2009/05/congressmen-want-automakers-to-cough-up-diagnostic-codes.ars)I was thinking about the same thing. If all the computer codes were made public, anyone could have the ability to make changes to any part of the vehicle and share the information free to anyone to upload and make the same changes.

This is how the Evo guys tune.
http://www.evotuners.net/forums/f5/ecuflash-setup-instructions-tutorial-1091/

$89 for the ODBC2 connector then the software is free and they are ready to go.
(That site will also give you an idea of the future of Ls1gto since that is another AF forum with their full ad suite running)

They also have a software that you can pay for that includes logging and live tuning like HP Tuners, it costs them a whole...... $29, and there are no credits to worry about. But at least to make you feel better a tune for them is $400 from a shop showing you just how little most shops here acctually see in profit from tunes on our cars.

Unfortunately the GM tuners are making far too much $$$ off of their efforts... and those with the smarts aren't giving it out :(

It's definitely a shame that there aren't any free tuning packages and [relatively] inexpensive cables...

Yeah, i wish there was that option. I used open source to tune subarus, it was a great program too.

I'm surprised there isn't an open source alternative. Seems like there's an open source alternative for everything else.

Guess that the folks who have invested the effort in cracking the PCM have decided to be tight-fisted with it to make money. I know that there was a lot of stuff that went on in the DIY neighborhood when the LS1 PCM was first getting cracked, and became ls1edit... the open source folks who gave them a lot of information got really pissed that they turned it into a commercial product and didn't give back, so I think that killed a lot of the DIY spirit as well.

Quite unfortunate...
