Recently did the 8.8 conversion.... http://gastiresoil.com/showthread.php?t=2594

But the motive gear is just TOO DAM LOUD for me. So, here we go again.

New rear cover and support bracket arrived. (same as before just powder coated a bit different).

called a local (50 miles away) Ford specialty shop and "money pit" has an appointment this Friday morning to have the new gears installed.

"money pit" has a full tank of gas, and a new set of rear gears in the trunk. Headed to the shop in the morning!

I got to the shop (50 miles away) at 8:30 am for my appointment at 9. Pulled the car in the bay at 9...... and we worked on it and worked on it and worked on it..... I left at 2:30 Saturday morning, yes AM.

Results are the same. Roaring on deceleration. We took it apart 4 times. Set the backlash at .004 according to alldata. Drove it and backlash = .010. Reset and same results, or even worse. Found that if we set it at .004 and rotate the unit, the lash increases as much as .010 we removed the posi and ring gear, cleaned the surfaces = same results. We installed a very used old Ford posi with no ring gear and measured the flange = same results. ????? Housing screwed up ????

Talked to Mike aka 2qwkr06gto and planing to pull the entire unit and send it to him. I may just buy another center, posi and gears.

dam..... no matter how much money I shovel at it, I can't fix it! So frustrated I priced the car at $27,500 to another board member on Saturday. I kinda guess it's a good thing he passed.

not in iron. The aluminum is available, but its not as strong.

Wow Tom sounds like my kind of luck. My built trans is flaring on 2-3 shift, going to lower shift rpm a tad and hope it's ok. Really don't want to have to pull it out and send to century again :(

Is it possible that the gears are just noisy? have you tried to just put a differnt diff in with out messing with the gears (junk yard diff?). Sounds like that was what you did but I didn't unserstand?

What about the Posi unit what are you running? could that be making noise?

Sucks that you are having so much issues man. I hope Mike can square you away.

we installed a junker Ford 8.8 posi with not ring gear. Spin it by hand and it too turns like an egg. Going from zero on the dial indicator to a plus .006. It's a brand new detroit true trac. But I feel we eliminated that by using the junker Ford unit and getting the same results. It's probably the housing or main caps.
