ETG'S 3rd Annual River Trip

Ok This is Ash's baby, but since she refuses to move over I need to start this thread.....

Ok guys so date is AUGUST 21st, 22nd & 23rd, a 3 night stay, now you don't have to stay all 3 nights, but I beleive the min. stay is 2. The majority of us will leave early ass Friday morning to get there at a decent time, so we can "maybe" fit in a short tube ride for those that want to.We will be staying at Rio Raft & Resort. You can see all the prices on their website www.rioraft.com (http://www.rioraft.com/). Dody, the owner is going to call me back tomorrow about group discounts for the sites and tubing. Here is what I know so far, sites 11 - 20 are available, I figured it would be nice for us to try and stay all together. Now the most you can fit on any of these is a pop up. I don't think anyof us will be pulling/driving an RV. Once these get booked I would try and stay in sites 23 - 34 which are directly behind the others. Basic rate is $32 per site per night, which includes 1 car and 2 people (includes water and 30amp 2 plugs). A rate of $6 per person per night for anybody over 2 people per site is charged with a max of 10 people and 2 tents on each site and $3 per night if you will be bringing an AC unit. If you want to really ruff it they do have actual tent sites with no water or electricity for about $27 bucks I believe.

They do charge full basic rate in order to make your reservation, so $32 bucks which came out to $100.80 (for 3 nights) when I made my deposit and when you arrive you can pay for your additional people and AC.

you guys realize that 1 of those links (the one talking about facility closures) is for Guadelupe River State Park which is WAY upstream of Canyon Lake. We tube downsteam of Canyon Lake's dam (far east side of the lake) that the other link is showing is at an acceptable level right now, albeit slow...

The place you guys are going to stay at is very nice. The only downside is the water is a tad bit more shallow there (thats right near where I stayed in 2006 when I went tubing) vs where we stayed @ last year.

OK, so I called the Peepster earlier cause I was too impatient and my assumption was correct...here is what he had to say...where we are staying (the 4th crossing) is closest to canyon lake/dam and as long as the cfs's stay between 50-100 we should be fine but it will be slow, I told him I didn't want to have to worry about walking and or our ass skimming the bottom and he said in the worst case we can always float the Comal which is spring fed and water levels are higher and would run faster...I/we will just keep an eye out, specially the week of the trip for the levels and flow and if need be resort to floating the Comal...ok I think I got all that right, Peeps???? So no worries, plus it is a few weeks away and it's too early to predicit anything and they can very possibly still get some rain down there?!?!?!

One warning on the comal. it is in city limits and where the sherrifs have been hanging all summer since the other is so low. being in the limits you may only have a personal cooler 1 per person that can hold no more than 6 beverages. No group cooler in the tube anymore.

Water on the guadalupe is so low in some points that people were walking and carrying their tubes down it.

We floated the Comal. Water level was fine. It was a lot of fun!

1. coffee pot, coffee, creamer, sugar, 5 cups ( Me Pop Donna Ash and 1 extra so if you drink coffee bring your own coffee cup.. I have plenty of coffee and condiments)
2.Plastic spoons. knifes. forks some paper plates, napkins
3. band aids, first aid spray, antibiotic cream
4. Sunscreen, aloe gel in case someone gets sun burned
5. Advil

I think that's my plan too, make our list on the way and get it when we get there, less to haul and will save on room and gas. And James lemme know what your bringing so we can plan accordingly, thankfully the FJ does have a luggage rack but you may need to bring your own rope/bungees.

well, as I told some of you, my free hotel night plan had gotten some wrenches thrown in it...

As it turns out, I got them worked out. We will be staying at the Holiday Inn in New Braunfels for Friday and Saturday nights. We likely won't be on the river Sunday as we will be driving back home and I used to barely make it back to Austin after river trips, much less Denton, so tubing before driving is out for us...

We will be heading down Friday. I am working a half day, but I am considering working that half day in the car on the drive down, so our Denton departure time is still up in the air.

FWIW, as most of you know, I am pro Guadalupe River guy. Personally, I would rather float 6 hours on a slow lazy river with some low spots than float 2 hours on the constant level Comal a few times in 1 day. I hope we can, as a group, keep an open mind to the Guadalupe and make a "game-time" decision based on the actual water levels once we arrive. My bro went 2x's this summer already and he said both times, the water level was sufficient to have fun and that was with flows in the 60-70 cfs range...like it is now.

We'll do what the group does, but IMO, the Guadalupe provides a much more relaxing, long, peaceful day compared to the chaos of the Schitterbahn crowded old NB area of the Comal for a 2 hour float where you have to get back on a shuttle and just do the same stretch again if 2 hours wasn't enough.
