This will be a thread for an ongoing review of the Sumitomo HTR Z III's. I was getting close to bald on my Bridgestone RE-01R's and needed a good replacement. I have been doing research over the last few days before I pulled the trigger today.

So a bit of a background, I autocross about once every two months, and I drag race at the track 1-2 times a year. I am pretty demanding on my tires and went through the 01R's in about a year. My car is also a Daily Driver, on the public streets I am a pretty domesticated driver. So I had a few requirements going into my new tire purchase.

1st. They had to grip.
2nd. They needed to last

After searching around I was pretty set on a set of Hankook Ventus V12 Evo's. Car and Driver had comparison between them and multiple other tires and they were quick. The price was good as well, Tire Rack had them for $138 a tire. The treadware rating was 280 which isn't bad and was double that of my 01R's. I started reading about the Sumitomo's though. I usually discount Sumitomo because I had heard that the HTR Z II's were pretty crappy, but the more I read about the HTR Z II's the more I found that people had nothing but praise for them. Even the Autocross group thought that they were a great tire. Tire Rack had a comparison and put them up against the Bridgestone RE050A's and had the Sumitomo's out on top as the winner in the Dry Track times, quietness, and smoothness. The best part was these were only $116 from tire rack and had a treadwear rating of 300. I was pretty much set at this point that they would be my tires of choice.

Total shipped from Tire Rack was $520, an awesome price, I called up NTB since I knew they carried the Sumitomos as well and they would be who would be installing them once I received them (only place in town that gets to touch my rims) and i asked if they could match the price. They were running the tires for $180 a piece and couldn't match the price but if I wanted a set they would do a buy 3 get one free deal. Before tax this worked out to $540. About $20 more than tire rack and I would have to pay sales tax. This was an acceptable difference for me to get them today and installed. So the total installed came to $630, I was expecting to be under at least $800 on new tires so I am $170 up from my budget and really happy with that.

So on to the review. I will be updating this over time to give my thoughts on how they are holding up. Today is my first day with the tires so I can't speak to them much, just give first impressions really.

The Tread Pattern.
It isn't exactly what you would call sexy. My 01R's looked meaty and mean, they forced you to notice the car had some serious tire on it. The Sumitomo's just kinda look normal. Not a major problem but if you are concerned more about how your tires look than perfom, it might make a difference.

The Ride Quality
Holy Crap. These things are amazing. Far more quiet than the 01R's and no where near as rough. We have a lot of pot holes here in Leander and some times they can send a shot ringing through your spine, the Sumi's are really smoothing those out. I was surprised.

Handling.
I haven't had much experience in the section yet, the tires haven't been broken in, and like I said I drive pretty normal on the streets. I did give it a first gear punch while turning on to a pretty wide open street and immediately the back end broke loose as expected while turning but was just as quickly brought back into line. I won't really chalk that one up to the tires yet until I break them in. There is an Autocross this coming weekend and I am very tempted to go to test them out. We'll see.

Stay tuned for more details as I wear through them.

Did you get the II's or the III's? I have a set of the II's and absolutely LOVE them, great traction all around, dry and wet. The only thing I don't like about them is the squeal they make when spinning, where other tires just spin these like to howl. I am looking forward to hearing what your experience is with them as I don't auto X. My son picked up a set for his Honda recently to replace the overly expensive Bridgestone's he was running, he does much more twisty driving than I do and he also has nothing but praise for them less the squeal.

I put these on the rear of my 99 Z28 and love 'em. They are nice and stiff without bringing alot of road noise.
I have brand new BFGs on the goat (but that wont last long:gr_jest:), but for the price and performance - Sumitomo is my replacement of choice.

I went with the III's pretty much from everything I have read they took was was good about the II's, made it better, and left out all of the bad. So far I am loving them.

Meant to update this earlier. 1st Autocross went great on the new tires, I need some new brakes at this point but the tires were fantastic. First run went out and took it easy, managed a 55.637. By the end of the day I pulled of a best time of 52.530. I ended up 4th out of 6 in my class. Not too bad considering I am stuck in a class with internal engine modded STI's and EVO's. Best time was 47.445 from a STI with a lot of internal engine mods, full suspension, and R compound tires. Right now I really need to get a good set of stiffer springs on the goat. The WW1 package I have on the car is good but the weak ass Stock springs are not stiff at all and the car rolled like a beached whale. At least the tires were sticking wel..

Last Thursday I put my 18's back on with new Sumitomo HTR Z III's. I'm really happy with them so far.

So I guess I need to update this now. Almost 6 months in and I am still really enjoying these tires. Been through 2 autocrosses and they are still gripping like no one's business. Drove to Shreveport for the USACi world finals and still had my spine intact so they are riding smooth as well. Wet wether traction isn't up to par with my old 01R's but I am never scared of what the car will do and I always feel in control. The 01R's just allowed me to Hoon a bit more in the wet.

Negative camber in the rear ruined two of my tires, had them replaced and swaped the older ones out back. Went to AutoX this last weekend and cam within 2 seconds of my buddy's Evo X, I am hoping the coilovers help to finish bridge the gap, but I can't fault the tires.

This is a great thread. Really wish I would have come across this before I bought my tires in August. :(

I've used 3 sets of these and am buying another set this week.
Pros:
Smooth at high speed. Had mine to 175 MPH.
excellent dry traction.
moderate wet traction.
good tread life.
Bargain basement prices.

Cons:
A little out of round.
chop up easily on front due to cars high caster requiring frequent rotations.

I just now noticed that my wife has these on her mazda3 hatchback. They seem to have held up pretty well. Thinking about going with these next time my goat needs tires (which will be a while).... I have cheap Primewell's on mine, but gotta admit, they are GREAT.

Update on mine. Like mentioned earlier I have the II's on my car, 245's in the back and 235's in the front. I have about 30k on them now and the treadwear is absolutely amazing. They have started to make some more road noise now than when they were new and the wet traction must have got left behind in Mexico one night, they are OK in the wet if you drive EASY, however ANY other than normal input to the go fast pedal and the rear tires just can't hold it. I haven't had any issues stopping in the wet, I experience a little push (under steer) when going around a corner what I would consider a normal speed in the dry, but it's manageable. All in all I am still happy with them, but I have been looking around for new tires as I am going to replace my Drift R's with something different before long, I am looking hard at the Sumi HTZ III's, and also the B.F. Goodrich G Force Sport's. Cost wise the Sumi's have it hands down, I just haven't made up my mind yet.
